reasons to be true to your teeth or they will become false!

As a 45-year-old, Kritika was happy with her teeth as there were no visible teeth concerns or toothache. Regular brushing was enough for her and apart from uprooting two wisdom teeth, she never felt the need for regular dental visits. “Genetically we never had an issue in our family so I don’t see the need for a regular dentist” she would unequivocally mention to her friends and family. A couple of months later, at a family gathering, her cousin pointed out that her teeth seemed yellow and had plaque. Embarrassed to the core, she pursed her lips and refused to laugh aloud – her usual self-confidence lost in the yellow colour comment.

Unfortunately, this is true for many of us who keep dental health and well-being at the bottom of the health pyramid. Only when someone points out or there is discomfort, does the need to visit the dentist arises. That’s the time we either call our near and dear ones and rely on their experience to try the services of a dentist or search on google to identify a dentist based on ratings.

What we fail to understand is that dental health is a reflection of our good health and well-being. Our dental problems like cavities, gum diseases, bad breath can affect our overall confidence which further has a bearing on our overall mental and emotional health. Research has shown that an extra 30 years have been added to our life expectancy in less than a century. And therefore it becomes most important to take care of our overall health and well-being which includes dental health. So even if you brush your teeth daily and ensure healthy oral hygiene, a visit to your regular dentist is important and the need of the hour.

5 reasons why oral health is important

  1. It Affects Your Overall Health
Your mouth is the door to the internal parts of your body. Systemic diseases such as diabetes often become apparent as varied kinds of dental problems. Research from Harvard shows that patient with periodontal disease are at a greater risk of having heart disease and chronic inflammation may affect several parts of the body.
  2. Tooth Loss
One of the most common issues is tooth loss amongst children and adults is primarily because of poor dental hygiene. Plaque buildup caused by poor oral hygiene may result in severe tooth decay and lead to tooth loss. While brushing, flossing helps reduce plaque, it is advisable to visit your dentist for a dental cleaning at least twice a year.
  3. Confident smile
For a healthy smile, you must practice good oral hygiene every day. Keeping your teeth plaque-free can help you flash that radiant smile with confidence.
  4. Healthy gums mean low risk
Studies link oral inflammatory disease and elevated heart disease risk. According to the Canadian Academy of Periodontology, people with periodontal disease are at greater risk of heart disease and have twice the risk of having a fatal heart attack than people without periodontal disease.
  5. Gum disease and diabetes may be interlinked
Individuals with diabetes are more prone to gum disease and new studies have shown that serious gum disease may contribute to diabetes as it affects blood glucose control. The Canadian Diabetes Association says, ‘Because periodontal disease is an infection, bacteria produce toxins that affect the carbohydrate metabolism in individual cells.”

World Health Organisation (WHO) further states that oral diseases pose a major health burden for many countries and affect people throughout their lifetime, causing pain, discomfort, disfigurement and even death. These diseases share common risk factors with other major non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and nearly 3.5 billion people are affected by them.

So while vitamin C, nuts, apple can help you take care of your oral health, it is advisable to contact your Dentist who will navigate your journey well to ensure preventive and curative dental care.
